I like to define or understand the discipline word since the point of view that it derives from the latin discipulus, that means the one who receives the teaching from other, it is a relation between authority and subordination, it is the labor that a person exerts to teach or to acquire good habits and that includes the rules of behavior and the measure that take place in the compliment of that rules.
What would be discipline in the classroom without the support of the family nucleus?, the place where parents should be always working together to make their children a good person for this society?
I had an experience during my basic primary school when a teacher slap a girl on her face because she didn´t know how to mop the floor, and the one who used to hit with a stick in your hands palm if you didn´t know the multiplication tables.
Yesterday I was talking with a first grade primary school teacher , and she expressed that almost ten years ago, as a teacher, you could still ask the support of parents at home to discipline their children, -“you could see the results in the children the day after” but now, parents came to claim why are you disciplining their children,
I consider that both situations are the extremes, as in the first definition, making disciples has to be with been congruent and an example of what we say, that would be the first step, defining since the beginning the rules, what do we expect from them,
In my experience as a teacher I consider that we have to see ourselves as the authority, established the limits and maintain firm rules if we don’t fulfill them. If we are making disciples we need to show them how to be and what we expect from them, clear rules, clear instructions,
.If we don´t have enough support from parents at home, I suggest to create in our classrooms a place were children can talk and be listened between real rules and a discipline atmosphere.
By the way, I have this first rule in my classroom “not do to others what you would not want done to yourself”
